REVIEW: Opeth - Still Life Peaceville Records, 1999
9.5/10
Opeth - Still Life - cover art Mikael Åkerfeldt and his friends are back with a new album that is even more impressive than their last achievement "Morningrise". Opeth still stands for melodic and emotional death metal but the band has grown to be more mature which leads to better composed songs. Emotional acoustic interludes with clean vocals are woven together with heavy riffing and aggressive growling. Mikael Åkerfeldt is one of the best metal vocalists in the world. His growling is very clean, dark and deep and his clean voice is very emotional and powerful. Unlike many other bands Opeth has become better with each new release and they have now found an almost perfect sound with their characteristic ten minute symphonies constisting of emotional, thick and very complex music. Opeth has played an important part in the evolution of death metal in the 90's and has made themselves a name by not sounding like everyone else. Their fourth album "Still Life" will surely be remembered as one of the best albums of 1999. It was recorded at Maestro Musik and at Fredman Studios during the 15th of April and the 29th of May 1999, produced and engineered by the band themselves (sound settings and additional engineering by Fredrik Nordström and Isak Edh). It was mastered at The Mastering Room by Göran Finnberg.
