REVIEW: Orcustus - Demo 2002 (demo) Self-financed, 2002
8/10
Orcustus - Demo 2002 (demo) - cover art From Bergen, Norway, hails yet another quality black metal act by the name Orcustus. Even though this is a new band that formed only in the beginning of 2002, the band leader Taipan has been writing the material presented on this demo between 1998 and 2000. Now the loner has been joined by a very strong line-up including Infernus (Gorgoroth) on bass, Dirge Rep (ex-Gehenna, ex- Enslaved) on drums and Tormentor (ex-Gorgoroth, Gaahlskagg) on guitars. The band name appears to have been taken from the zine by the same name that the former Emperor drummer Bård "Faust" Eithun used to run. Orcustus is a tribute to the past and listening to this demo cd will certainly make some of you feel sentimental at your young age. Creating a balanced mixture between raw primal aggression and old-school but riff-happy black metal, these guys have produced one of the strongest demos I've heard in a very long time. I would definitely not call this groundbreaking or refreshing in any way but Orcustus is without a single trace of doubt one of the finest new old-school black metal bands out there today. Sounds like a mix of old Darkthrone and modern day Satyricon and Khold. The riffs have been updated but the coldness and minimalism is still there. If they don't sign to a label soon it would be a shame. Controlled chaos and violence at its best.
