Relatively harmless fluff that recalls the likes of Lacuna Coil before and after they became overly enamored with American mallmetal drivel, Orestea hails from the UK and plays a generally breezy variation on goth and light power metal with metalcore flourishes. It’s most definitely long on commercial aspirations and might even catch the ear of an A&R wag or two hoping to break the fourth or fifth gal-fronted band since Evanescence conquered mainstream rock radio, but after the melodically pleasant naivete of the opening title track, I’m just left scowling or shrugging over the remaining five tunes. Singer Lisa Avon sounds mostly like Cristina Scabbia, which you can take as a compliment or insult at will, but either way I’d rather see her develop into her own person one or two records hence. In the meantime, this is creatively innocuous and noncommittal, musically slack and conceptually bereft, with no amount of handsome cover art or packaging capable of changing that this time around. Let’s hope for more next time, shall we?
