REVIEW: Origin - Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas Relapse Records, 2002
8/10
Origin - Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas - cover art After a strong self-titled debut a couple of years ago, Kansas band Origin is back with another raging outing of extreme death metal. Their ranks have changed somewhat, as they now have James Lee on lead vocals and Mike Florez on bass, and their sound has a little bit more to offer this time around. Drummer John Longstreth still owns the Origin show with triggered but nonetheless impressive snare salvos and percussive deception. He sometimes accents the vocal patterns, which see a larger range on this album, and sometimes the guitar riffs, which are also more diverse ; songs like "Portal" and "Inhuman" show some blacker melodies and new techniques. While there has been some progression, Origin still maintains the sound that either won you over or turned you off on the debut, exemplified in numbers like "Larvae of the Lie" and "Implosion of Eternity". Both of the guitarists add some well-placed back up vocals once again, at the same time shredding their way through triplet-picked bursts of utter devastation and newer moments of dark atmospheric dissonance. Lyrically, Origin seem content on a sci-fi slant, which is fine considering that most of the world's premier bands don't actually need a theme or omnipresent topic to garner support. Having earned a spot on the criminally start-studded Nile, Hate Eternal and Arch Enemy tour, Origin will likely win over many who felt that their earlier work was somewhat repetitive.
