Dedicated and entirely convincing black metal, this CD-R adheres to boh thematic and musical austerity over the course of its entire twenty-six minute length. Orion – another way overused band name – hails from lovely England and is the side/secondary project by Artisian’s Moloch AKA Iain Miro (I’m sure he responds to both). It’s tough to say whether this is more black than the other or simply more pure and streamlined of purpose. Nameless songs are referred to solely as numbered “stanzas” and feature an idea, a riff or two at most, logical albeit unsurprising (and thankfully REAL) drumming and blistering shrieks and croaks throughout. Best of all, the bass rumbles like Motörhead meets Kyuss, bubbling over and lending this an even creakier atavistic vibe. Admittedly, it’s hard to get worked up over such dotting-the-i’s genre fodder at this point, especially when the songs on offer seem like two- or three-minute black metal vignettes rather than full-blooded expressionism, but the execution is completely up to par. I mean, it’s effing brutal in places. Worth a spin or two, a merciful filing away, and perhaps a revisiting down the road some.
