REVIEW: Ork - Blessed By Evil Folter Records, 2000
6.5/10
Ork - Blessed By Evil - cover art Here we have the debut album from Ork, a five-piece evil black metal horde from the darkest abyss of Bulgaria. The band was first formed in 1995 but did not have a proper line-up until 1999. They released several demos and a 7" split cd with the Norwegian band Frostmoon on Oskorei Productions in 1999. They have also played lots of live shows in Bulgaria, also with famous bands like Darkseed and Rotting Christ. I can really understand this because they are a talented and rising black metal act. The reward for their skills came in May 2000 when they recorded this album and gained the attention of Folter Records who signed them for 3 albums. I don´t know that much about the underground scene in Bulgaria but I suppose that Ork is one of the leading acts, at least as far as black metal goes. The style they have embraced is the old traditional raw black metal without much symphonic keyboards or any techno influences. Ork has a very distinct sound that reminds a little of Swedish bands like Dark Funeral or Marduk. Except for the obvious, speed and aggression, there is also a lot of melody, passion and atmosphere in their music that gives this album a very nice sound altogether. A pretty good production (not perfect though) and vocals that are better than most black metal bands doesn´t make it any worse. If you´re into raw old-style black metal this is a recommended object of attention. They still have to work a little on their songwriting though since they sometimes shortly seem to lose focus.
