REVIEW: Orkrist - Reginae Mysterium KRV Records, 2002
7/10
Orkrist - Reginae Mysterium - cover art This is the first release from KRV Records, a new subsidiary to the Slovak label Forensick Music. Orkrist is a very young band from Slovakia that was formed in June 2000 by Crom as he left his former bands Mean Geimhridh and Sine Nomine. Even though they have only been alive for 2 years they have already developed a very mature sound and played live with bands like Agathodaimon, Ancient, Ancient Ceremony, Behemoth and Ever Eve just to mention a few. You can find influences from many bands in the music on this album. There are keyboard sounds that reminds me of Dargaard and an atmosphere similar to the unique Russian band Rakoth, song compositions reminiscent of My Dying Bride and several Wagner-esque orchestral pieces, such as the wonderful intro, that makes Summoning come to mind. On top of all this there is a chilling cold sound coating that is often apparent in music from Eastern Europe and, not to forget, a nice medieval touch. The medieval influences come alive fully on the beautiful non-metal song "Sword And Sorcery" where the female vocalist Lydia is doing a great job as well. Her powerful voice graces most of this album but she is sometimes accompanied by male vocals ranging from whispering and distorted to death growls and black screams. This is without a doubt one of the most interesting new bands from Eastern Europe and they should appeal in particular to those of you who are into atmospheric doom, black and gothic metal.
