REVIEW: Orplid - Nächtliche Jünger Prophecy Productions, 2002
7.5/10
Orplid - Nächtliche Jünger - cover art This is yet nother first encounter for me. Orplid is a German band who released their self-titled debut album back in 1997 and after some mini albums and vinyl releases through Eis & Licht they have finally returned with their new album "Nächtliche Jünger". Prophecy Productions is a label that never stops to amaze me. Throughout the years they have released wonderful and unique music from bands like Arcturus, Green Carnation, The Third And The Mortal and Mysterium. Some of their bands I don't quite understand but I do admire them for their brave signings. Orplid plays some kind of Wagner-esque neo-folk with influences from national romanticism and German poetry. They actually sound very much like Mysterium but with less operatic and more gothic sounding vocals. The album starts out with a nameless track that isn't much to talk about but then comes "Erzengel Michael" which is a majestic piece of music that would fit perfectly as background music to a high altitude picture of a beautiful valley. It is one of the highlights of the album together with the dreamy and suggestive title track. Even though the two guys who make up the band look like two young nazi officers and the lyrics are entirely in German this is a very interesting album made for inner contemplation and philosophical reflection. Passionate, emotional, exciting, majestic and acoustic, what else could you ask for?
