Orplid music is hard to categorize, but I´ll try to do my best describing the feelings that these notes whisper in my ears. For they are but silky murmurs that reach heights of magnificence every now and then as this album is played. Distant from the metal world, although closer to darkness than expected, “Nächtliche Jünger” could appeal to the doomy souls that wander the Earth, despite the “ambient folk” label stuck on its descriptions. Manifold vibrations clad in the shades of night is what the listener can find in these collection of songs. Acoustic guitars and the gifted voice of Uwe Nolte, the main entity behind Orplid, conform the essence of the music with a huge load of innovation and originality. Not just loose chords played the cheap folky way; forget about plain friendly verses sung along light hearted chord sequences. Thus guitars have interesting arrangements: phrases of notes wisely chosen, electric guitars which caress the songs, pure intimacy performed with the six strings.
The vocals, ah, the vocals... Uwe Nolte´s voice is solemn, epic, grandiose, elevating. Intensely deep and elegant, rises above the musical landscape filling the air. However, this album is much more than this. Here we can find also cute little jewels that enrich the songs: violins, orchestrations, female voices, distorted vocals. On the other hand, some ambient passages wearing the Death In June seal. And now I could name some similarities for those of you willing to know where all this is going to; nevertheless, believe me, it´s a tough work! Ulver´s “Kveldssanger”? Opeth´s “Damnation”? Not very convincing comparisons, though. Maybe Tenhi or Forseti, bands classified in the ambient-folk scene, could be a (not quite close) reference. In a nutshell: I recommend this album for lovers of tranquil music with a strong emotional load, fond of romantic, dark, sorrowful tunes. “Nächtliche Jünger” is creative, brave and worthwhile.
