REVIEW: Otyg - Älvefärd Napalm Records, 1998
9/10
Otyg - Älvefärd - cover art Until this debut album from Otyg was released back in 1998 I doubt there were many people who knew how well metal could be mixed with Swedish folk music. This band is definitely one of the most unique and groundbreaking bands in the history of metal and I have never heard anything like this. Melancholic, tale-like lyrics, beautiful melodies based on guitars, violin and mouthharp, the sweet female vocals from Cia Hedmark and the powerful voice of Vintersorg are the most important ingredients for Otyg. Since 1998 Vintersorg has been heard in several other bands like his own solo project, Havayoth and he is now also the new vocalist of Borknagar. It is not an exaggeration when I tell you that he is one of the most talented musicians and unconventional vocalists ever to walk upon this earth. Napalm Records has always been trying to sign bands with emotional music and a special atmosphere and Otyg is one of their best choices so far. The album was recorded at Ballerina Audio in October and December anno 1997, produced by Otyg and Nils Johansson, engineered by Johansson and layout by none other than Jens Rydén of Naglfar. Flutes on the album were played by Linda Björkman and Marianne Folkedotter.
