Overgarven’s "Promo 2005" is another demo that has surprised me in the last few weeks. I actually wondered what it was after I had inserted some CDs in my CD player and it played it at random. All songs on this promo are to be featured on Overgarven’s debut album “Just a Fake”, so we are provided with a little sneak preview of what’s coming up.
The first song “Bleeding World” starts with a kind of reverb guitar intro followed by nice solo work of another guitar. After a few drum rolls, a kind of melodic death metal verse sets in. With two types of vocals, of which I especially enjoy the high pitched ones, they just sound very good. The growling vocals are not bad either, and are certainly not overdone. It all just adds up to a nice melodic death metal song, with even a bit of operatic voices halfway through the song. Next up is “Just A Fake”, the title song of the upcoming debut album. Some nice guitar melodies and a nice atmosphere lead into the first verse, where it is taken over by a very epic feel, and good screams. A lot of changes of tempo is what makes this song so good though I would have liked to hear the high pitched vocals in this song as well, but perhaps it was just a guest singer?
The third song, which brings me over half way already, is called “Shattered Values”, which is another very decent song with a lot of different guitar riffs and some well-timed tempo changes. The vocals are very well done, and so far I’ve had nothing to complain about this melodic death metal quintet. “...Rehenta” is up next, which has a great intro, blasting drums mixed with good guitar melodies. Though I don’t know what the title stands for, I must say that this is a very good song, where especially the two different vocal styles (one is more like screams, the other more like black metal) stand out. With “Let Me Die” I have come to the end of this promo but just before the end I’m provided with a very good acoustic intro, followed by the nice solo work as in the first song. Though the intro is very good, the first verse is not so good. I like the clean vocals, well at least the idea, but they’re not very well done. However, even though there’s a small downside, the chorus is very good again. Overgarven’s promo 2005 is a very good mixture of melodic aspects and pure death metal, and they have done a great job. So I recommend everyone to check out this band.
