Since recording
and releasing their debut album the Spanish band Overlife have found a new
vocalist named John Negrete (Psicopatas Urbanos) as well as played with
Kamelot and participated in the first official Dream Theater tribute. A Dream
Theater tribute is very well suited for this progressive heavy metal band
since Negrete actually sounds a lot like James LaBrie although he is
definitely no copy and doesn´t really have the same vocal range as him but
there are not many people who have. Overlife is musically not as similar to
Dream Theater as they are vocally. Their music is still progressive, complex,
technical and of course also occasionally boring as the songs are sometimes
too long but it is a little more cheerful and power metal inspired than Dream
Theater who have a tendency of making more or less sad songs. You don´t have
to worry about Overlife being too soft and mellow because songs like "Last
Millennium?", "Sleepers" and "Freedom" show that they are well capable of
making the very best of progressive music while still maintaining heavy metal
riffs as the supporting foundation. The creative keyboards from Sergio Sanchez
and the charismatic, emotional vocals from Negrete adds that little extra
touch that separates them from the lot and is needed in order to make Overlife
one of the leading progressive bands in Europe. This album doesn´t quite top
the latest release from Dream Theater but it is comparable to the earlier
material from the band. The wonderful production job done by Daniel Saiz
doesn´t make it any worse either. I hope that there is a lot more to come from
Overlife in the future. The album was recorded and mixed at Sacramento Studios
in Alicante, Spain.
