REVIEW: Oversoul - Seven Days In November... Gutter Records, 2000
6.5/10
Oversoul - Seven Days In November... - cover art Wow, a band with clean vocals! Well, I am sorry to be surprised but to tell you the truth I have almost solely been listening to growling death or screechy black vox lately. It feels a bit strange hearing a normal voice again. Oversoul is a heavy metal band from Oklahoma in the land of opportunities (and death penalties, KKK, poverty...). The kind of music they are playing is very melodic but still heavy metal and also somewhat doomy. Considering the fact that the band consists of only two members (Dennis Cornelius & Patric Barrett) I must say that I´m quite impressed with what they have accomplished with this album. The most prominent strength of the band is the interaction between the emotional guitar melodies and strong vocal lines. Cornelius does not have the best voice in the metal world but he is using it in a way that makes up for the imperfection, especially in the opening track "Games". Overall this album gives a nice first impression but it has a few drawbacks as well. Sometimes the music tends to be a little boring with slow heavy rhythms in order to serve as background for the vocals. Conlusion being that I think this band needs a final touch from one or two additional members. The production I´m not that happy with either since I don´t like this kind of muffled sound although I don´t know how it would sound if done differently. However, this is a good release full of warm, embracing but still heavy metal that would suite the taste of most metal fans I think. The album was recorded at Hai-Tex Studios in Dallas, Texas, in November 1999. It was produced by Mike Trujillo, John Perez and the band.
