March 19th, 1982, was the day that tragedy struck the Ozzy
Osbourne band. In an airplane - tour bus collision accident the guitarist
Randy Rhoads was killed together with the pilot Andrew Aycock and the band's
hairdresser Rachel Youngblood. Being only 25 years of age Randy Rhoads had
become one of the most famous guitarists and before joining the Ozzy band he
had formed his own band Quiet Riot. This tribute album to the memory of Randy
was not released until 1987 for many reasons. It contains songs recorded at a
live show in Cleveland, Ohio, in late 1981 and also studio out-takes of the
song "Dee". Here we can listen to many classic songs from the entire Ozzy
back catalogue. Masterpieces like "Crazy Train", "Suicide Solution",
"Iron Man" and "Paranoid" have inspired countless young men and women to
start writing heavy music of their own. I must admit that the music that
Ozzy's band have produced throughout the years is not that impressive to me.
Instead I think that Ozzy is at least 75% of the band because without his
unique vocals there would simply be no band. It was different with Black
Sabbath but the solo career has never been about the music, it has been all
about Ozzy which is something you can either like or dislike. Still, there has
always been that special magic surrounding an Ozzy recording and this is the
only live recording of Rhandy and Ozzy
together.
