REVIEW: Pagan's Mind - Enigmatic: Calling Limb Music Products, 2005
7/10
Pagan's Mind - Enigmatic: Calling - cover art Pagan's Mind is one of many instrumentally skilled bands who have ended up signing a contract with Germany's Limb Music Products. The common feature of these bands is that they usually consist of extremely talented musicians but the song writing ability varies quite a lot and is often the weakest link. I had the chance to witness Pagan's Mind live at the Gates Of Metal festival in HUltsfred, Sweden, last year, but then I did not have the chance to watch more than a small fraction of their rather short performance. From what I can remember they did not make an overwhelming impression on me but they were fairly comfortable with the stage. Now that I hear their latest offering "Enigmatic: Calling" I finally have the time to sit down and concentrate on solely listening. Now I realize what Pagan's Mind is all about, intricate and complex progressive power metal with a very thick layered sound that reminds of Nevermore more than once. The album is really heavy and powerful at times but also dreamy and laid-back with plenty of unexpected twists and turns. Pagan's Mind are far from predictable and that makes listening to their music quite entertaining, at least as long as you have the concentration level set high enough to grasp everything that is going on, which is quite a lot. Worth looking up for fans of bands like Nevermore, Kamelot, Fates Warning and Stratovarius. Not enough to make your eyes drop out but a good, detailed and solid album. A journey for the mind is what Pagan's Mind offer.
