Although many suspected this to be the first, ‘Rebirth’ is the second album by Pain, a one-man ‘band’ existing only out of Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy, Bloodbath, The Abyss and many more). Peter plays all the instruments heard on the album, including being responsible for the production, the mixing and the recording (at his infamous Abyss studio). What you get to hear is clean vocals unlike that in Hypocrisy, yet strong as always, backed up by some heavy industrial metal riffing and especially a clearly present keyboard sound. Each song has it’s very catchy melodies, making Pain a band much more accessible for people that begin to listen/experiment in the metal scene. This also proves by the fact of the released videos (which actually show other members, namely Mathias Kamijo, Saroth and Horgh) for singles ‘End of the line’, ‘Suicide machine’ and ‘On and on’. ‘Rebirth’ indeed moves ‘on’ what concerns the previous self-titled album, marking Peter Tägtgren’s true distinctive Pain sound, this time released on a perhaps surprising label (Stockholm records) instead of the first which was released on Nuclear Blast.
