REVIEW: Pain Control - Subvert Demolition Records, 2002
6.5/10
Pain Control - Subvert - cover art Sometimes you run into a recording that could have sounded so much better than it does thanks to the lack of a good production. The producer behind this album by the British band Pain Control is a rather experienced one named Dave Chang but this time he has failed slightly in giving the album the clean, sharp edge it deserves. Despite this the music is very enjoyable in itself with nice thrashy riffs and raw vocals coupled with cleaner ones. Most albums you listen to these days are not very varied but this is not the case with this one. We get everything from the pure thrash metal of "Pure Aggression" to the nice slightly epic track "5:12 am" and the gothic atmosphere of "The Cursed One". Throughout every song we can enjoy the raw vocals of the band's founder Adrian Carloss but also a few female words. I wouldn't call the music nor the vocals beautiful but Pain Control have managed to create an album that doesn't sound like any other which isn't that easy today. It has power, atmosphere and, above all, the lack of unnecessary guitar solos or excessive use of keyboards. Speaking of keyboards, the former Cradle Of Filth and current Anathema member Les Smith lended his skills for this album by adding some effects and keyboards. This is an interesting band that could go far if they just see to it that they are given a cleaner and more suitable production next time. Stand-out tracks: "Pure Aggression", "5:12 am", "Subvert" (wonderful song!).
