This is the first official DVD of progressive metal band Pain Of Salvation. Entirely based on their last studio album called “Be”, a concept release about God and creation, they offer a show halfway between a theatre play and a regular live concert.
POS have always been an untypical band in the current progressive scene. As others just try to copy Dream Theater or dinosaurs from the 70s shamelessly, they have managed to create a style of their own diving into the latest metal tendences (sometimes grazing nu-metal) and classic prog rock.
This is a good show despite the certain coldness in some passages, maybe because of the camera direction, so until the third or fourth song we can´t see nor hear the audience clapping and therefore the live atmosphere is lost.
We´re before a great work from the band led main composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Gildenlöw (also involved with The Flower Kings) which shows all the nuances of his voice as he plays guitar, percussion and everything he puts his hands on. There are weak moments like the strongly gospel influenced track “Nauticus”, where the camera is fixed on a candle as the song is played on playback (I suppose it´s due to the complexity of a live performance of that tune).
An emotional highlight of the album is the track “Vocari Dei”, in which we listen to the messages left by the fans in an answering machine, making questions to God itself, accompanied by the excellent work of Fredrik Hermansson at the piano, sending the listener shivers down the spine.
Overall impression: DVD with quite good image and sound that will follow the release of a CD featuring the whole concert. In the meantime, we will be waiting for a DVD revisiting songs from their previous albums.
