REVIEW: Pantheďst - Amartia Firedoom Music, 2005
7.5/10
Pantheďst - Amartia - cover art Deep voices in the vein of Type O Negative´s Pete Steele dark diatribes? Well, let´s take thing easy... despite that oddity shown in the first track, Pantheďst haven´t sold their soul to gothic landmarks. “Amartia” is still doom metal, the Pantheďst way, namely: long songs, a floating feeling of desolation and solemnity, melodic to a certain extent and without excesses, prominent use of keyboards to create ambiences, an influence of church music, and, of course, a permanent slow pace. “Amartia” delves on the ritual side of doom, so looks like as if this band wanted to be categorised as religious doom metal. Not in vain, as one can see the concept of the album spins around the religious topic, with songs named after the seven deadly sins, prayers, the ten commandments and so on. I don´t mean they are a bunch of self-righteous doomsters nor anything similar, though. In fact I think behind the music there´s a story of a person who denies religion and we read all his doubts, fears and visions of God.

The opening track shows Pantheist´s deck of cards and gives a hint of their style and goals. Church-like chorus very well done, steady drums which don´t deflect from the sacred path to follow, supporting the solid guitar work. The slowness ever present, doom metal flowing. Some elements from other kinds of metal are also here and there. In the end of the first song “Apologeia”, there´s a blastbeat passage with a church organ added. In “Wrath”, the guitars and voice instantly remind the listener of black metal tunes. Vocals are very varied, with ranges from the aforementioned dark registers ŕ la Type O Negative or Moonspell to throat growlings or blackened screams. The same way, the music is mostly slow and deeply doomy, based on distorted guitar chords, but there are keyboards providing some raids into other territories, and even some accoustic guitars. Honestly it took three of four times to listen to the whole album before I could write a single word about it. Now I have done it, I´m ready to say “Amartia” is a correct album with very good ideas, fitting perfectly in the hall of doom metal bands to take into account in the current scene. Clearly, a step forward from the first album (which wasn´t bad at all). Something really great can be taking shape...
