REVIEW: Parabellum - Stainless New South Metal Records, 2005
8/10
Parabellum - Stainless - cover art Upon the first notes oozing from my speakers, I detect a severe Black Sabbath addiction. The thickening riff instantly recalls that legendary band's self-titled and perhaps most malevolent song. Did I mention it kills? 'Cause it does. The opener is called "Skull and Bones" and features guest vocals from none other than Mr. Evil his damned self, Ben Falgoust of Soilent Green and Goatwhore infamy. There is an absolutely killer vibe goin' on here and that monstrous Sabbath groove is revisited throughout the song. Opening salvo aside, Parabellum is a band deeply infected with the sickness of Acid Bath. Listen for that band's signature hooks everywhere and even some vocal cadences and riffing that seem to be directly lifted from that long gone and manically original band. Other points of reference perhaps necessarily include Soilent Green and Crowbar. With its members sporting shirts from the last two bands mentioned and Down, it's no wonder they sound entirely like spawn of NOLA. Parabellum, however, hail from Pensacola, Florida and have been around for over a decade now. Keep the faith and support these Swamp Metal madmen. Besides, their bassist -- Todd the Viking, he of the looong, blonde beard -- will kick your ass if you don't get on the boat. Stainless is a great romp through the swamp and will certainly satisfy your Acid Bath fix. Two horns waaay up, brethren.
