Besides being an atmospheric optical phenomenon where sunlight refracts in small ice crystals in cirrus clouds, Parhelia is also a quartet from Dublin. The band (formerly known as Revile) plays instrumental music somewhere between postrock and atmospheric prog. Parhelias first release is an EP called “First Light” that contains five clean, instrumental compositions. It is tasteful and not very complex but there is still something quite intriguing about it. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what it is, but one thing is sure: Parhelia is good at what they do, all the tracks are most enjoyable to listen to. The only complaint is that the music is constructed in such a way that it sounds like a background for singing. You keep expecting the vocals to kick in any second even though you know this is instrumental. If the band manages to change that and find an expression where it doesn’t feel like something is missing, then they will be great. Otherwise they simply have to get a singer.
