Well, this was the first album since The Heavils that really pissed me off while I was listening to it. This band fails in nearly every respect. They lack any form of innovation though their promotional material seems to think that they're a revolutionary act, fusing new and exciting genres. Well, I beg to differ. In fact, I want to ask the author of that information "what the fuck genres are those?" Becuase if you're referring to the attempted blend of metal and hardcore, its far from exciting and nothing close to innovative. Even though I have a hard time appreciating metalcore (Born from Pain excluded) I definitely know a good metalcore album when I hear it, and Misanthropos just plain missed the mark. The texture of the music is often muddled by what i'd like to call "multi-layer madness." Paria gets too caught up in trying to sound chaotic and angry, when what arises is something closer to the realm of shit. Every now and then I saw a bit of hope on the horizon as the band ripped out a nice riff only to let it quickly decay into the cacophanous maelstrom of crap.
The vocals are bland and irritating mostly due to the monotony of the singer's voice and he fails to exceed his two note vocal range. This is not to mention the relatively poor quality on the recording of the vocals. Overall I really have nothing good to say about this album other than that the guitar work is decent and that usually once or twice per song the band comes up with a compelling riff only to lose it too fast. Or in other cases they'll just follow it up with another noise-attack. I'm also gonna use this as a forum to voice my complaint about the current trend in metalcore of using dissonant chord structures. There are a few cases where it's appropriate, sounds cool, or adds atmosphere to the music, but it's not necessary in every song. And when used too often it just sounds like the band doesn't know the meaning of harmony. I can tell from the level of technicality found in some of the guitar work that the band does in fact know how to harmonize, but ignores their ability to do so and rather mashes together one too many diminished chords. My message to Paria, "It doesn't hurt to use your technical skills to make your music sound good. Give it a try next time."
