REVIEW: Peccatum - Amor Fati Candlelight Records, 2000
8/10
Peccatum - Amor Fati - cover art Peccatum consists of Ihsahn from Emperor, his wife Ihriel, her brother Lord PZ from Source Of Tide and, for this recording at least, the percussionist Per Eriksen. I am not that familiar with the music of Source Of Tide but I can tell you that this wounds no way near Emperor which is a good thing since it would otherwise be rather unnecessary to create a new band and I doubt Samoth would be very happy in that case. Peccatum is much more technical metal than Emperor and at times even a little chaotic. Since we have three vocalists and two keyboard players in the band they rely less on the guitars than most other metal bands but thanks to Ihsahn they still have their fair share of heavy riffing. The music of Peccatum is a mix of black metal, gothic music and some classical influences, especially with the prominent keyboards. Ihriel doesn't have the most beautiful or powerful vocals in the world but they are still very original and fits into the musical landscape very well. The only thing that could have been a bit better on this album is the production although it is not bad. Ihsahn has succeeded in creating a new band distinctly different from all others and this is some very interesting music.
