REVIEW: Penitent - Deserted Dreams Beyond...Prod, 2004
7/10
Penitent - Deserted Dreams - cover art In 1994 Karsten Hamre was obsessed with the idea to combine his darkside poetry with music and the result was, as we all know by now, Penitent. An engine to fuel the power of the shadows, a ship to guide us through the night. Passion, pain, torture, sadness, sorrow but also beauty are the ingredients and "Deserted Dreams" is the latest product. Having previously worked with several different labels he has now landed a new contract once again with the Italian avantgarde dealers Beyond...Prod who have released great albums from artists such as Ensoph and Satarial in the past. On "Deserted Dreams" Karsten has journeyed back to trace his sonorous roots. He has dug up the corpse and the pieces have been reassembled to create yet another majestic opus. This could be seens as his tribute to the funeral doom genre. While staying away from metal he has composed a very slow, moody, mournful and dark album that could be described as the Skepticism or Thergothon of darkwave. Hope has been lost and, enclosed in darkness, only a river of tears remain. The end is near but the spirit of Penitent has never been more alive. Symphonic, dark, industrial, artsy and, lest we forget, impressive.
