REVIEW: Pentagram - First Daze Here Too Relapse Records, 2006
7/10
Pentagram - First Daze Here Too - cover art Those who know the legendary American metal band Pentagram mainly for their doom metal days may be surprised while listening to this double disc collection from Relapse Records. The reason for this is that it focuses on the band's early history and consists mainly of songs released on limited run 7" EPs in the 70s alongside never released material and live rehearsals. Back in those days Pentagram were primarily influenced by bands such as Sir Lord Baltimore Groundhogs and Blue Cheer and on the first disc we are even in for a cover of the Rolling Stones classic "Under My Thumb" from 1966 which comes in a very nice take. The first disc is mainly classic 70s hard rock that should appeal to fans of Deep Purple and, to a lesser extent, Black Sabbath. The other way round applies for the second disc where the band's stoner / doom tendencies become more apparent and this is the sound that later came to influence genre defining bands such as Spirit Caravan, Cathedral and Trouble. "First Daze Here Too" is a warm and cozy collection of songs with a strong 70s vibe but to be totally honest it serves mostly as a nostalgia trip or collector's item. Pentagram needed a decade or so to mature and their latter recordings are to be preferred in my opinion.
