Pentagram is one of the most famous doom metal bands in the
Black Sabbath vein. They are also one of the absolutely oldest ones and formed
as early as 1971 or 1972 by the vocalist Bobby Liebling who is still in the
band after 30 years (!). Liebling does of course not have the voice of Ozzy
but his style of singing is almost identical to what Ozzy sounded like in the
early days when Black Sabbath produced their best material. Almost every song
that Pentagram makes is built the same way with ultra-heavy, doomy riffs and
the charismatic vocals from Liebling. This compilation disc consists of tracks
from the three albums that the band released through Peaceville Records namely
"Relentless" (re-release version of their self-titled debut album), "Day Of
Reckoning" (re-release) and "Be Forewarned". This means that the music on
this album ranges in time from 1985 to 1994 and gives a very good picture of
what Pentagram is all about. I can not tell for certain but I suspect that
Pentagram was the first doom metal band on the American continent and perhaps
the first in the world if you don't include Sabbath. There are only two
things that you could possibly complain about when it comes to this album. The
first thing is that if you aren't a fan of the genre you might become bored
with the similar sound of the songs. The second is that the sound is not
entirely perfect since some of the songs were recorded in the mid 80's. Other
than that this is a wonderful album that is full of riffs that are as
brilliant as they are simple. For example, it is pure pleasure to listen to
the ultra-heavy closure of "Burning Saviour". Fans of old Black Sabbath
should not miss out on this album for the world. Who could turn down 79
minutes of classic doom riffs?
