REVIEW: Persuader - When Eden Burns Dockyard 1, 2006
6.5/10
Persuader - When Eden Burns - cover art Swedish power metal purists Persuader have surely received some extra media attention for the release of their new album "When Eden Burns" due to the much spoken about collaboration between two of the band members and former Blind Guardian drummer Thomas Stauch's new project Savage Circus. Now the two bands also share the same record company in Dockyard 1, the child of Noise Records. While Jens Carlsson still is the same Hansi Kürsch soundalike as before, the two bands differ musically as Persuader maintains their own identity which has evolved throughtout almost a decade of existence while Savage Circus steps back towards a more traditional Blind Guardian sound. They may strive towards different musical goals but the two bands nonetheless share the same guitarist and vocalist which may cause identity problems in the future although I certainly don't hope so. Persuader is a multi-faced band, shifting back and forth from simplistic, heavy riffs to impressive instrumental solo escapades, never forgetting to take advantage of the vast capacity that frontman Jens Carlsson is in possession of.

For the new album, which is the third in line, Persuader have recruited a second guitarist called Daniel Sundbom who adds extra power and depth as Jens Carlsson steps back to concentrate solely on vocals. Whether it's the right decision or not the future will tell because it feels slightly as if this is the first chapter of a new book for the band. It is difficult to point out exactly where they are going wrong but there is something missing to make the songs memorable despite nice melodies, aggressive outbursts and powerful vocals. It almost feels formulaic at times with little to surprise the listener but the opening track "Twisted Eyes" is nonetheless a quite enjoyable experience. Not bad but it takes a lot more to impress me these days.
