REVIEW: Perverse Souls - Corpus Christii Self-financed, 2003
6.5/10
Perverse Souls - Corpus Christii - cover art This French quartet shaped their existence way back July 2000, and never done anything way back then because of the traditional reasoning: “due to different personal problems”, alrite! Now… it seems to me that the band does exist for over 3 years already and this material is their firstborn. What other kind of problems (line-up, etc) the band has encountered during the past 3 years is not my priority of reviewing. This is the band’s first effort, so I assume that there is no point of tracing back something I am not familiar with. Musically, I can sense that these Death Metal boys (very young guys appearing here on the picture, so?!) were very well rehearsed as they capture everything in a rehearsal room (booklet claims!), so tight and promising. Given the information, I say that the sound was rather ‘good’. So, what kind of a rehearsal room that can afford to endorse a sound like this? Perhaps, the well-equipped one will really do so. Focusing on the effort of each member, Nefast did a very good scaling job. His entire fingers walk, and too many harmonics were talking here and there. Seeds of Arkhon Infaustus were obviously running – but this is not the band that reminds me while playing this silver platter. Overall, the sound and the entire performance of this material is a complete reminiscent of… BLASPHERION (remember Rest In Peace?). Yeah right… the speed; the vocals (very boring low barks) and almost everything you hear right in this CD are Blaspherion! I just don’t know if that is a good or a bad remark to consider. Sure that the band is intense, but a mere decade is not a long time to easily forget what the past have offered on us. I am sure, however, that Blaspherion could not be an influence for these young men. But how about Deicide, and well… Arkhon Infaustus?? There were just a shitload of Brutal Death Metal bands coming out in France just lately, and Perverse Souls is not an exception. What leaves me criticizing is the fact that some of the song titles appearing were so childish: Nun’s Rape (haha!). What kind of “sick” fantasy these 4 young people have in their mind is really going outside my knowledge, and I wonder what kind of flow the lyrics of that song could have been. Very well… the said song even comprises an “intro”: a raped nun, ha! Unfortunately, it didn’t sound as shocking because the howls doesn’t sound like someone is being raped but more like a bankrupt bitch taking a wild shower – in what kind of movie did the band took this kind of sample, anyway?! Summing things up, there is not much of a problem listening to Perverse Souls. It is not the most brilliant thing I have received this week, but considering that this is just the band’s first demo – I can say that it is quite promising. Nevertheless, the packaging looks nice: CDR with colored sticker on it, and a bubble jet printed cover (not the best dpi from a band residing in Europe, though!).
