REVIEW: Pestiferous - Deep Dark Seasons Behemoth Productions, 2005
5.5/10
Pestiferous - Deep Dark Seasons - cover art At first sight, everything in this album makes you think about raw pure black metal. However, Finnish act Pestiferous perform a brand of black metal, but hand in hand with Swedish melodic influences, resulting in a sound which shares a lot of elements with bands as Dissection, Lord Belial and so. Nevertheless, the roots are clear, and the grim shrieks, the typical rhythms and cold melodies are firmly nailed to the black metal standards. The speed is mainly fast here, not blastbeats at all, and some of these tempos with groovy drums strengthen that Swedish feeling, you know, that no man´s land where black and death metal collide and intertwine, toying with each other. In fact one of the most enjoying thing from Pestiferous are those rhythms. Drums are simple and double bass drums are pretty scarce, so the complexity of the music isn´t high. It looks like the style of the band is a bit different than most of the albums falling on our hands nowadays, and the guys are correct in the performance of the songs. Correct, and the sound is ok too. That´s all, for Pestiferous are certainly not the eighth wonder in the world. The songs (which don´t last more than four minutes in any case) pass before your eyes and ears without leaving a relevant mark on the listener. There are no melodies sticking to your mind, nothing special in the music, at least in my case. If the Pestiferous guys record music just for themselves and to quench their thirst of playing black metal, all right. If they try to do something new, or they have some musical endeavors and goals, they haven´t succeeded in their quest for the quintessence. Not bad black metal, after all.
