REVIEW: Philomel´s Epitaph - Promo 2005 Self-financed, 2005
6.5/10
Philomel´s Epitaph - Promo 2005 - cover art Featuring members from known Norwegian bands as Urgehal, Asmegin or Illnath, here we have the first effort from this unsigned act based in the UK. Despite black metal seems to be the former style of these guys, the music is rather modern death metal leaning towards Swedish territories. Three tracks conform this promo made to break the ice on the scene. The opening track is average death metal nicely performed without any impressive sensations. Mellow parts and eerie raspy whispers alternate between mid tempos and some full speed passages. Correct and varied, after all. “Imps Across All Earthly Nations” is the weaker of all songs. The plain, slightly soulless death metal is luckily altered in the middle of the song by a guitar hook devoted of classical music that awakes the listener on time.

The last one is the place where the band seem to dare in creating something and leaves aside the cliches, and hence it´s the most prominent effort on the promo. The guitars carve straight forward melodic riffs all the time with a wide variety of success in achieving remarkable results. The vocals are constantly enriched by whispers, raspy shrieks of any kind and female vocals. At times, this song sounds like Cradle Of Filth played the death metal way. When the band stick to their root style the music becomes a more or less steady dose of competent death metal, although the glimpses of originality are rather rare all in all. On the contrary, the apparition of the less traditional elements as strange voices, samples or keys provides variety to the whole and a certain touch of inspiration, so the overall result gains significantly and this promo stands away from boredom due to that. This band makes you think about a thousand of others without having still a style of their own. The debut full-length album is currently being prepared so one can hopefully expect they improve their sound and make it more personal in order to achieve relevant goals. Philomel´s Epitaph is an act capable to hit the scene with interesting music but still some more work and inspiration is needed. It´s almost mandatory for them to delve into the vast landscapes of creativity without fear.
