This is decent grind with tons of short songs packed onto the
disc. Phobia printed a "we are not a PC band" disclaimer on the front panel,
which got my hopes up a little bit, as I have yet to really encounter anything
but that in the genre. Sadly, though, as with 99% of "grind", this is more
PC than a Canadian election. Just as many death metal bands use juvenile
zombie movie scripts and wanna-be evil babbling in the place of lyrics, the
grind scene is constantly rehashing adolescent-level slogans targeting "the
man" and "the establishment", churning out stacks upon stacks of silly
left-extremist bunk. Most grind, with Phobia being no exception, is
essentially punk riffs on top of blast beats with low-end barking vocals.
There are no real melodies to speak of, and the songs usually end before any
progression can be made. The other members of Phobia should step up and
contribute a little more to their band, as singer Shane McLachlan wrote nearly
the whole album and, despite looking like he's well into his 20's, ended up
with something any confused 14 year old could do. I think Fat Mike of NOFX
might revoke McLachlan's membership in the "I hate myself" fan club,
though, as McLachlan penned a number called "White Devil" for the album,
where he exposes the double standards in the racism argument when it comes to
Farrakhan-like groups. There may be a place on your next compilation for a
couple of these tunes, but an entire album is too much for this white
devil.
