REVIEW: Phoebe's Phobia - Dead Sea Fruit (demo) Self-financed, 2002

Phoebe's Phobia - Dead Sea Fruit

(demo) - cover art Phoebe's Phobia is a very young band from Lancashire, Great Britain, that wasn't formed until the year 2000 by a man named Kirk Houghton. The band claims to have been influenced by bands as diverse as Faith No More, Celtic Frost, Morbid Angel, My Dying Bride and thrash metal in general. I can't say I hear any Faith No More in the music presented on this demo but I guess you can find traces of all the others. The demo was recorded on a four track cassette recorder in order to recapture the sound Celtic Frost had on their legendary "Morbid Tales" album. I think this was a mistake because the sound is really awful at times. The music actually sounds pretty good though except for the catastrophic vocals which sounds like Fenriz with a frog in the throat. The vocals is the only thing that sounds like black metal though since the music itself is very thrash metal oriented with some slower doomier tendencies now and then. This band will have to improve especially two things in the future - first off the production needs to be better and second the songs have to be more coherent and fluent. They have a long road to walk but they are also a very young band so they have an interesting future in front of them I think. The highlights of this demo are the cover version of Celtic Frost's "Dethroned Emperor" and the slow Opeth passage of the last track.
