Pigmy Love Circus is a band that does not conform to any musical norms despite, or perhaps thanks to, featuring drummer Danny Carey from Tool, one of the most successful bands in modern extreme music. "The Power Of Beef" (what a wonderful title, eh?) is the second album from the band that was born once upon a time (more accurately in 1987) in Los Angeles, California. The reason for their low productivity is of course that Carey's schedule with Tool became too hectic to be able to work another band on the side. Now the circus is back in town though and another slab of heavy rock was thrown into the record stores in October last year. The sophomore album begins with a very cozy western movie vibe that sets the atmosphere before the heavy guitars kick in. The rage and attitude of punk rock is mixed with heavy rock / metal riffs and on top of this the raw and unpredictable vocals from frontman Michael Savage make sure that Pigmy Love Circus fall out of standards. Uncompromising gasoline driven rock music that smells of burned rubber and grease.
Michael Savage has a very personal singing style, sometimes adding somewhat of a spoken word influenced touch that reminds me of Zach de la Rocha who fronted nu-metal pioneers Rage Against The Machine in their glory days. His vocals are much less polished though. If you enjoy raw, groovy and heavy rock music devoid any fancy solos and beautiful melodies then by all means give Pigmy Love Circus a try. Stand-out tracks: "Livin' Like Shit", "12 Gauge Kiss".
