REVIEW: Pitbulls In The Nursery - Lunatic Black Lotus Records, 2006
6/10
Pitbulls In The Nursery - Lunatic - cover art To start the review on a positive note, it is clear that Pitbulls in the Nursery are a skilled group of players who are striving to take metal in another direction. While the formula they have come up with is not for everyone, it is hard to deny that they clearly state their originality at an early stage. However, originality doesn’t necessarily make for entertainment, and I personally find it hard to get in to this album. The band is described as “cyber death metal”, and this sums up their mechanical approach pretty well. There are plenty of erratic rhythms to be found, with the drums keeping the songs unpredictable, and the guitars following in a similarly fluid way. However, this often has the effect of breaking up the flow of the songs, and it frequently feels like a collection of instruments playing rather than one band working together. On top of this, some of the riffs could be a lot more exciting – a ‘cyber’ label seems to suggest fast and intricate riffing akin to Suffocation, but some of the time the guitars are a bit disappointing. A good way to picture this band would be the sound of newer Decapitated fitted around the unpredictability of Atheist, and to this extent they achieve what they probably set out to do. However, from a listener’s perspective, a lot of the tracks just seem too fragmented by stop-start riffs, too dominated by the drums – which are played well but overshadow the guitars – and lacking the punch that you’d expect from death metal. True, there are the occasional blasting sections, and the typical death metal growls, but the potential bite is taken out of the band by the weak volume of the guitars and the lack of really memorable ideas. There are certainly better points to this album, like the amusingly titled ‘Monkey’s Masturbation’, when the ‘cyber’ approach really seems to click and the band seem to work well together, but at other times it becomes slightly tedious listening.
