For some albums it takes quite a few listening sessions to understand the music and let the album grow on you. The latest full-length “Mercy” from the quartet Planes Mistaken For Stars is definitely one of those albums. The music is dark and melancholic and there are obvious influences from amongst others Mastodon and Neurosis, but without turning into a copy of any of them. The album runs though a wide variety of moods and covers pure anger as well as silent angst without ever loosing the energy. Planes Mistaken For Stars manages to keep up the intensity also in the parts that are calmer or acoustic even, and thus the record never gets boring or monotone. It is well produced (by Matt Bayles, Mastodon, Isis) and there really aren’t any negative things at all to say about this music. Those who already are fans of Planes Mistaken For Stars will not be disappointed an neither will fans of the influences already mentioned above. This is certainly not an album that will get the party going but it sure is a really great album and if you haven’t discovered this band yet you should definitely check it out.
