REVIEW: Planet X - Live From Oz Inside Out Music, 2002
7/10
Planet X - Live From Oz - cover art Planet X originally began as the solo project of Derek Sherinian after he had left Dream Theater in 1999. Today Planet X is a real band featuring Australian drummer Virgil Donati and guitarist Tony MacAlpine. As you might expect the music is a lot more keyboard based than that of Dream Theater but it is also more experimental and fusion like. Actually it sounds very much like the Liquid Tension Experiment albums but more structured. If you enjoyed those two LTE releases you will probably like Planet X as well. "Live From Oz" is a live album and was recorded at the last show of the band's Australian tour in June last year which took place in Virgil's hometown of Melbourne. During this tour the bass duties were handled by Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse). As usual when it comes to the live albums of today the production is sterile and the live atmosphere has been removed almost completely which is a shame. The music is still good though but personally I think the music of Planet X is a little too progressive and 70's sounding for my taste. Derek Sherinian is a classy musician and Tony MacAlpine deliver some nice solos though which makes this band well worth checking out if you are into progressive rock / metal. If I were you I would rather look into their debut release "Universe" or the soon to come follow-up.
