REVIEW: Powerwolf - Lupus Dei Metal Blade Records, 2007
6/10
Powerwolf - Lupus Dei - cover art The power metal vampires of Germany takes a bite at our necks once more with their sophomore album "Lupus Dei". Powerwolf was still a very young band when Metal Blade signed them for the debut release "Return In Bloodred" in 2005 and it also showed on that album which was rather an immature and far from overwhelming experience for the listener. The (genre-wise) unusual lyrical concept and image as well as the King Diamond-esque atmosphere of their music probably made quite an impression on Metal Blade Records though and I must say that there is something intrigueing about this band after all. "Lupus Dei" is superior to the debut album in every aspect but they have not strayed far from their musical nor lyrical path. Instead they have refined their skills and written material for a slightly more memorable album. Opening up for the real album tracks is a very nice epic intro which leads into "We Take If From The Living", one of the strongest pieces that make up this creation with a powerful driving riff. Frontman Attila Dorn is not an amazing singer but his slightly rough edged voice still seems well suited for the music. The biggest problem with Powerwolf is that the image tends to become more of a comedy such as it has with bands like Manowar, Rhapsody and Lordi and that the music always comes second. "Lupus Dei" nonetheless possesses kind of a childish charm and might appeal to fans of Dream Evil who don't mind the vampiric concept. Stand-out tracks: "We Take It From The Living", "Mother Mary Is A Bird Of Prey".
