Hailing from the not very Metal shores of Virginia Beach, VA, USA, Praemonere shoot themselves in the foot right off the bat. Well, if one is to believe their press release, business card, or sticker, that is. Their claim is that the band plays "Metalcore - Progressive Metal - Hardcore" -- and this is incorrect, but in a very good way. There is neither hide nor hair of Metalcore or Hardcore on this self-released album. What we have instead is a rather Novembers Doom sounding band with one foot in the realm of Death Metal and the other entrenched in the regime of Progressive Metal. What is perhaps most impressive about the band is the do-it-yourself aesthetic of it all. Praemonere is proud of their ability to be a young/new band writing new songs rather than being a cover band, and this is of note. Lyrics are relatively deep, ranging from the personal to the political, and the music is lush and well played with the vocals primarily of the clearly enunciated Death Metal growl type. Occasional spoken word portions (see "Promise" and "Retribution") accent the overall sound nicely. Vince from Beaten Back to Pure(!) produced Praemonere's solid debut and the only reasonable complaint relates to a mostly transparent bass guitar. The notable exception is the album closer's introductory music. Otherwise clarity abounds. Although these 9 songs reach only 36 minutes, there is great promise for this young band. Maybe their local peers in Arsis could do some touring with these guys. If mid-paced Progressive Death Metal sounds like your cup of tea check out the band at CDBaby.com where you can buy this album for a mere $8. In a word: impressive.
