This is perhaps the most anticipated metal release of 2004. The Probot
project has now been presented in its final form to the public and we are
ready to judge the result. I have often argued that there is nothing more
important for a band than a talented song writer. Some may speak against me
and say things like Iron Maiden is nothing without Bruce Dickinson but I
strongly disagree. It is generally easier to find a new vocalist than a song
writer as they are the core of each band. Now I can use this album when I
try to prove my point in the future. If you for some strange reason do not
know this already then let me tell you a little about Probot. This is the
metal project of the former Nirvana drummer and current Foo Fighters front
man Dave Grohl where he tries to honor the 80s metal bands who inspired him
in his youth and formative years as a musician. He has composed all the
music himself but the vocals are done by a different vocalist in each of the
eleven songs. It all starts with the unmistakable voice of Cronos (Venom)
and then we have, in order from start to finish, Max Cavalera (Sepultura,
Soulfly), Lemmy (Motörhead), Mike Dean (Corrosion Of Conformity), Kurt
Brecht (DRI), Lee Dorrian (Cathedral, Napalm Death), Wino (St. Vitus,
Obsessed), Tom G. Warrior (Celtic Frost), Snake (Voivod), Eric Wagner
(Trouble) and King Diamond (Mercyful Fate). The line-up is highly impressive
of course but unfortunately the result is not quite as impressive. Dave
Grohl has managed to create resonably suitable songs for each vocalist but
there are only a couple of tracks that stand out and it all becomes clear in
the end. No matter how prominent these voices have been in their regular
bands they do not make it on their own without the proper musical support.
It is too simple and similar sounding all the way through to be the kind of
album that it should have been. After all, when setting out with such a
pretentious project there has to be more than this. A decent album it is but
nothing more which is kind of sad in my opinion. Stand-out tracks:
"Centuries Of Sin", "The Emerald Law".
