Procaos, the melodic death metal band hailing from Colima in Mexico have been around for a few years now but just recently released their debut album. With ‘Never Wake Up’ we are served with eight tracks each of a heavy calibre, the one more melodic than the other but all of reasonably high quality. Both the English and Spanish language is used in the lyrics to express feelings of anger and frustration. As for so many of us, the early In Flames albums have certainly had an impact on these guys. The result is that some songs sound somewhat ‘Swedish’ but in combination with the Spanish language it is like nothing I’ve heard before. Besides that, there is also enough trash and old death metal influences to be found so don’t get fooled though. No copycats at work here! The whole album sounds very raw and hard due to the dominating throbbing bass line and also maybe through the not so clear sounding final production but never mind that. The music sounds probably better this way without all the extra polishing and artificial techniques. (Note: the recording of this album was done in only two days time). Procaos has proven that not only Scandinavian countries produce great melodic death metal acts and that Latin America indeed has lots of good and worthwhile bands out there still waiting to be discovered.
