Like many bands, Russia natives Psilocybe Larvae have been struggling with line-up changes since the release of their first demo "Liar", in 1996. But with the right drive and ambition they have continued on their path of creating a unique solid mix of death, black, doom and even some folk metal elements, standing out as a little known gem in the underground. I find nothing boring about this 2001 release, though I'm quite sure so called "elitist" fans of black metal would disagree wholeheartedly and argue to the death against Psilocybe Larvae being considered 'Black metal' at all. From start to finish of "Stigmata" they've constructed majestic arrangements with powerful vocals ranging from doom / death growling to intense black metal screams. The folk elements are most striking in the two instrumental tracks "The Mystery" and "Burning Sunset". Both run smoothly with unbroken elegance. I like that Psilocybe Larvae tend to carry on a celestial atmospheric flow throughout the album. The only thing I am slightly disappointed with is the lyrical content; there really isn't any. It's understandable with English being their second language why they would keep the lyrics short and simple, but with a name like Psilocybe Larvae you'd expect (or at least I would) to hear something involving hallucinogenic revelations and dark yet colorful depictions of different dimensions and states of mind. Either way, I would hold this one as highly recommended to all fans of melodic black metal and black metal with folk elements. Also reccomended: 2003 release 'Agony'.
