Psych Onation is a young Swedish comet that features the former Lambretta pairing of Petter Lantz and Marcus Nowak. Once again they find themselves working together with a female vocalist; this time she is called Vilaivon Hagman. While Lambretta turned out to be a rather streamlined pop / rock act with a few memorable hit songs, Psych Onation is darker and more personal in its nature. Neither the musical foundation nor the vocals from Vilaivon are exceptional on their own but the heavy riffs, special effects and the tender yet sharp vocal performance work surprisingly well together, making this so much more interesting than most other female fronted bands of today. While not really similar they still remind me of Guano Apes once in a while. Let's just hope that they don't follow the same path into boredom (you have not heard Guano Apes unless you've heard the debut album). Even though Psych Onation dwell in the shadowland between mainstream pop / rock and a darker shade of metal, they will surely appeal to a broad spectrum of music lovers. In fact, this album was mastered by Widda from the Swedish death metal act Diabolical. Feel the stench of death now? Then let the symphony surround you and remember this name because this is one of the few promising newcomers I have heard so far this year. Passionate, absorbing, personal and catchy music made in Sweden. I'm glad that Linda Sundblad left Lambretta for a solo career because otherwise this album would have never seen the light of day.
