REVIEW: Psychotogen - Perverse And Unnatural Practices Bring Out Your Dead, 2001
6.5/10
Psychotogen - Perverse And Unnatural Practices - cover art Psychotogen was first formed in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1999 by several former members of the death metal act Pessimist under the name of Excathedra. This is a real brutal band and their debut album is suitable only for those with a rock-stable mind and a yearning for mentally challenging tales. Brutal death metal bands are usually not that riff-happy and exciting but Psychotogen is gladly an exception here with the Pernia brothers creating a tight and dynamic audial assault worth listening closer to. An interesting piece of fact is that the vocalist and lyricist Rob Kline is actually about to become a doctor in forensic psychology and currently works at an American prison. Kline's growling vocals are dark and dirty, giving Psychotogen a very brutal edge. He knows different ways of using his voice though and sometimes there is almost a black metal feeling to it. If you dare enter the world of perverse and unnatural practices this is a good album to take you there. If your thirst for brutal death metal has not yet been quenched Psychotogen might just be the drug you need. The album was recorded and mixed at IQ Studios and Nightsky Studio in Waldorf, Maryland, and produced by Ron Vento (Aurora Borealis). The overall sound is a little too unpolished for my taste but that is just me I guess...
