REVIEW: Psychrist - Debauching The Minions Dissident Records, 2002
8/10
Psychrist - Debauching The Minions - cover art Goddamn if Australia doesn't have some of the world's best bands. New to my ears, Psychrist have their sophomore effort here in these 9 songs. Guitarists Yuri and Nathan show some talent on tracks like "Scourge" and "Depraved Humanity", with riffing that is both intense and musical. I love the title track's blast section with whole notes over top of it; drummer Glen's ability shows in the last minute of "Severance". The vocals are usually standard, yet variation is present during moments of "Dead Emotion". Psychrist seems to have been influenced by a lot of different forms of extreme metal, and it really shows as this is a superior album at a time when everyone and their cousin has a so-called "brutal and technical" death metal band. There is speed, aggression, brutality, melody, technicality, harmonies and lyrics that are actually enjoyable to read. "Debauching The Minions" is to my latest batch of death metal albums what an orgasm is to copulation. Favorite tracks: "Depraved Humanity", "Debauching The Minions".
