Well, well. Grinding death metal from Tasmania. Tasmania, to my knowledge a little island south of Melbourne, Australia, not only (most likely) packed with strange animals but also forming the scenery in the earlier part of crappy movie ”Young Einstein”, has finally picked itself up delivering a mighty fine record. I also quite fittingly caught Psycroptic live here in Linköping, Sweden, on their tour with Nile a few weeks ago. The record itself is a solid piece of grinding death metal, with a neat and clear guitar sound which I find necessary in this type of music. Vocalist Jason Peppiatt ranges from light to deep, most of the time in an excellent way. He does however need to work on his articulation, especially when he forces his vocals down to his deepest he loses force, and with that the ability to form words. This was made even more clear on their live show, where I'm 100% sure I was unable to identify a single word in his vocal assault. Given a little more accuracy to his vocals he would be a true great in the genre, not many master the vocal range he works with. The songs are potent and varied, the production is solid, and they were nice and tight live. They do however need to straighten up their live act if they want to get anywhere, tight yes, interesting no. They have large potential, and I'll keep my eyes on them in the future. If they make it is up to them, they have all the qualifications.
