REVIEW: Pulcher Femina - Shadows Of The Lovers Decadence Records, 2002
6.5/10
Pulcher Femina - Shadows Of The Lovers - cover art Pulcher Femina was born in 1997 as the solo project of an Italian named Roberto Conforti. Everything about this album, the title, the name of the label and the lyrics scream out gothic with capital letters but when you actually start to listen to the music it isn't that gothic at all. To some degree the music is as melancholic as needed to make black souls interested but this album is meant for dancing and it is actually a lot more cheerful than you could ever imagine before putting it in your cd player. It sounds a little like Aesma Daeva without the dark overtones and the operatic vocals. Instead we have medium deep male vocals from Roberto himself, trance-like synthpop and some, unfortunately a little pale, female vocals from Daniela Bruno who is also a member of the Italian darkwave act Miriam. Several tracks are actually quite nice but this album doesn't stand out as being very dynamic nor unique which is a pity because I'm sure Roberto Conforti is a talented composer. The final track has some fine orchestration that I would have loved to hear more of. If you like Clan Of Xymox you might still want to check out Pulcher Femina as well. Or if you want to spend an evening dancing and drinking red wine with your beloved one. Stand-out tracks: "Dark Clouds", "Take Me".
