REVIEW: Purgamentum - Deathenchanté (demo) Self-financed, 2003
6.5/10
Purgamentum - Deathenchanté (demo) - cover art Purgamentum is a death metal band from Sweden and so far there is nothing unusual about them. Now to the unusual part - all four members of the band are either on their way to becoming civil engineers (three of them) or have already finished their education (the fourth one). Two of them are actually studying the same program as my uncle did many years ago. Well, none of this is really of importance right now, let's get down on the music. Purgamentum is a very young band that formed in the spring of 2002 and this is their debut demo. Although the demo was recorded in a rather cheap studio the sound quality is rather high and you can clearly hear every riff. Having spent some time in the early days under various names like Gaysuckers and Gaycore you might imagine that these youngsters were not too serious about their newly founded band but guess again. Now that they have written enough material of their own for a demo they present themselves as a tight and solid outfit with the intent of securing a record deal which is something that might come true very soon as they have had some very positive feedback from a brand new American label. American is also the way they sound. Purgamentum have not been swept away by the Swedish tide of melodic death metal but have decided to stay true to what they all love - good old brutal death metal in the American vein. It is dark, brutal, aggressive, tight and epic at the same time. Purgamentum have only just begun their career but this demo shows great promise for the future. Stand-out track: "Covered In Dust".
