REVIEW: Purgatory - Luciferianism Animate Records, 2004
7.5/10
Purgatory - Luciferianism - cover art Purgatory have reached a very high level of musical performance with this album. This material brings them shoulder-to-shoulder with famous Death Metal acts such as Vader. Especially Vader. Every single note in here breeds with brutality, regardless if the part is blast beating or mid tempo, there is always at least something out of all instruments sounding brutal. There are nine songs and between them there’s mostly no big difference, they all have blast beat parts, and some slower or mid tempo rhythms (when only I think about ten years ago when I considered mid tempo parts like these a sign of brutality). All that is composed in a good manner mostly, although I wish for some more speed as the entire feeling is very brutal, so sometimes it seems like more fast drumming would do better. Guitar riffs are catchy, and remind a lot on Vader, both with sound and the way they are played. Still, they have intensity, darkness and melody. Although I have a constant feeling like someone is getting beaten up in this album I wish that they beat him faster, like they’re doing it in ‘The Serpent’s Creation’. When we are at lyrics and song titles, needless to say they are Satanic and blasphemous. Just like all albums I am reviewing these days. I started to wonder now, how much blasphemy is enough, and is there a category as ‘too much’ or ‘overflow’? Anyway, they seem like someone with nice IQ wrote 'em, so actually there’s no reason to complain… The production is one of the things I like least on this release when I am at it. It is very clear, very well balanced and so on, but only big fault is that the sound is too much similar to Vader. Just changing that could bring some more quality to the next releases. Also, there’s the Lemming Project cover ‘Judas Billygoat’.
