You would have thought that Sweden and Finland already had been drained of good bands by the metal labels but then suddenly another quality act shows up. Pyuria is a new signing to Rising Realm / Crash Music Inc. but they have been around since 1996, recording a row of demos until being offered this contract. After a pointless intro the band shows right away what they are made of with the beautifully titled "In Rotten Remains Forgotten Names Lie", a song that is representative of this album. It displays very diverse song writing, incorporating semi-technical death metal riffs, melancholic At The Gates / early In Flames elements and straight-forward thrash metal influences. This wide range of influences characterizes this entire recording. Sometimes Pyuria comes off as chaotic and wild but once you realize what they are doing you see that there is thought behind the song writing.
The production is powerful and clear and so are the growling vocals by frontman Osku Mäki. The album was recorded and mastered at the Fantom Studios (Diablo, Dyecast, Rotten Sound, Celesty), a professional studio who could offer the band the sharp edge that their music needed. Pyuria combine elements from most extreme metal genres, sometimes with greater, sometimes with lesser success, but they never fail completely in their attempts to forge a lethal assault on the ears of the world. The debut album from Pyuria is brutal, melodic, aggressive and fast-paced but never out of control and it is a work of art crafted with both skills and care. Whether you like brutal deathcore, intense grind or headbanging friendly death / thrash you will find songs to enjoy on this album. Pyuria do not reach the elite yet but they have released an interesting debut.
