REVIEW: Queensrÿche - Live Evolution (2 CD) Metal-Is Records, 2001
9.5/10
Queensrÿche - Live Evolution (2 CD) - cover art It can't be disputed that Queensrÿche is one of the most important bands in the history of hard rock and metal. Having formed the band in Seattle back in 1981 they quickly developed a unique sound that would come to rock a whole world, colored by the wonderful vocals from the classically trained Geoff Tate. This double cd live recording was done in their hometown in July this year and it is with great pleasure that I discover the great taste in music of their new label Metal-Is Records. Most metal fans would probably be interested mainly in their early releases up to the legendary concept album "Operation: Mindcrime" and this is also where the focus has been aimed at. This is the way hard rock was meant to be - great heavy driving guitars, passionate melodies and wonderful vocals. Having never been able to see this amazing band live I was a little surprised as I noticed that Tate's voice sounds almost as good live as it does on the real studio recordings. It isn't really fair towards the other guys in the band but in my opinion Tate is responsible for most of the band's success. His voice is amazing! If you want to experience the best of one of the best bands in the history of mankind you now have your chance. I am not going to comment on the second disc in this set - if you like the latter albums you do, if you don't you don't. "Empire" was a great album as well, then they went downhill musicwise while the voice of Tate still keeps them up. There are some occational great tracks even on the latest albums though. I am usually not very fond of live albums but this is probably the best one I've heard so far.
